The Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton is the comprehensive cancer center for northern Alberta and a center for the province-wide prevention, research and treatment program. The Department of Oncology, a branch of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, is located at the institute. The center also conducts research through the Alberta Cancer Research Institute. The Cross Cancer Institute provides advanced medical and supportive cancer care on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, offering a number of services including chemotherapy, diagnostic imaging, magnetic resonance imaging and radiation therapy. The institute has two state-of-the-art PET/CT scanners for cancer screening and treatment capable of providing high-resolution images. This new technology can screen three times as many patients, leading to earlier detection and more treatment options. The Alberta Health Services Thoracic Malignancies Tumour Team endorsed a publication titled “Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma” that offers detailed recommendations for managing and treating mesothelioma. Members of the Alberta provincial team, which include medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists and thoracic surgeons, have provided a comprehensive, intensively researched document detailing the staging of the disease, histology, diagnosis, surgical options, chemotherapy protocols and radiotherapy. They advocate a multidisciplinary team approach.
